Aiken's Choice celebrates winners at Newberry Hall

The Aiken Standard readers’ picks were honored in a 28th annual celebration at Newberry Hall with nearly 300 attendees. Winners collected framed certificates as photo booths and swag bags enhanced the evening. Watchdogs sue feds over nuke pit plans challenges NEPA review

Queen Quet of the Gullah Geechee Nation and allied public interest groups sue the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration alleging environmental duties are being sidestepped in plutonium pit production. The suit seeks a halt until a fuller assessment under NEPA is completed, a process that could take months or years amid prior support from officials.

City OKs 15.7M Hitchcock Woods stormwater project

Aiken City Council awarded the Hitchcock Woods stormwater project to Thalle Construction of North Carolina after review by staff and McCormick Taylor. The low bid fell to 15.4 million with cost estimates rising to 15.7 million after contingencies. Aiken will apply 1.75 million of federal relief funds from ARP to the project, part of a 4.3 million total ARP relief for the city.
