Red white and food Independence Day events in Aiken County

Fireworks and food celebrations mark the Fourth of July weekend in Aiken County with events on Friday and Saturday. A Digistar Laser Fantasy Show at USC Aiken DuPont Planetarium, 471 University Parkway, starts at 9 p.m. Saturday with a tribute to American astronauts, concluding with fireworks. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for grade-school students, and $1 for USCA students and faculty.

No immediate crisis in Aiken County groundwater study

One year into a three year study hydrologist Bruce Campbell of the US Geological Survey says Aiken County groundwater resources are extensive and rainfall levels could keep supplies ample. The work assesses availability water quality and whether contaminants like radium or chlorine affect the system. City of Aiken relies heavily on groundwater for about 85 percent of its water demand.
