Jane Peterson Retrospective Highlights a Neglected Painter
A Columbia museum shows Jane Peterson in a six-gallery survey tracing her five-decade career from Pratt Institute studies in 1895 to works featuring landscape life and portraiture. Influenced by Impressionism and Joaquin Sorolla, Peterson’s sunlit sea scenes and outdoor portraits reveal a persistent independence and international influence. The CMA exhibition runs through July 22, pairing Peterson with contemporaries and noting prior neglect despite early patronage by Tiffany and others. Dr. Tom Mack, emeritus USC professor, adds context with local cultural histories.
