Former GEAR-UP director urges program continuation
Gwen Johnson, former director at Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, led GEAR-UP from 2000 to 2004 and stayed involved through 2005. With a six year federal grant ending in August the program will close in its current form in Aiken and other South Carolina locations. Johnson says the effort will evolve into a more permanent model while reflecting on decades of similar work and the need to keep engaging middle and high school students in science and math.
