A 40 percent chance of rain tonight with 50 percent tomorrow gives way to scattered showers through Sunday and Monday while skies clear to partly cloudy. The S C Child Passenger Safety Act becomes active Sunday with a 25 dollar fine for noncompliance. It requires all children under four to ride in restraints on state highways with specific seat and belt rules.
The Aiken Recreation Department presents the 1984 summer concert series with the Aiken Community Band directed by Alex Henderson at Hopeland Gardens Monday seven p.m. The program includes Star Spangled Spectacular selections from E T and Dixieland Jam. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Rye Patch lot offers parking.
Lenell Geter, a 26 year old former Texas imprisoned man from Denmark, plans to marry Marcia Hickson of Orangeburg on Saturday. He lives in Greenville Texas and works for E Systems. The wedding will occur after his release from custody.
Dan Bacot recalls a recent Tennessee tournament when a brother in law won 5000 dollars with a hole in one and Bacot did not receive a share. He jokes about giving away clubs after a previous round when no thanks were offered for a gift.
About 150 attendees at the ARTS meeting debated four widening plans for Whiskey Road. The crowd largely favored the "do nothing" stance, with some proposing a reversible third lane if action is needed. Proposals ranged from widening Whiskey Road to five lanes to extending Laurens Street with costly multi-lane changes.

Gov. Dick Riley signed the $217 million education improvement package as part of a $2.7 billion 1984-85 budget. The first phase of a $1.3 billion five year effort, the plan aims to raise teacher salaries, expand remedial programs, and fund school construction while boosting standards and discipline.
John Cunningham, formerly Graniteville Company vice president, becomes CFO of Palmetto Federal Savings and Loan of South Carolina. He will remain on the board and bring broad financial expertise to growth plans while continuing as board vice chairman since 1983. He moved to Aiken in 1972 and has held various senior finance roles.
