Charleston adopts ordinance blocking nuclear fuel shipments
Charleston City Council approved a 5 to 4 ordinance barring on city streets the transport of high level radioactive material including spent nuclear fuel from abroad. The measure requires 48 hour notice and police escort for other nuclear shipments with medical or defense exemptions. Mayor Riley defended the move as a call for shared national regulation.
