Aiken in the Shadows: Basso's In Their Own Image Explored
Dr Tom Mack discusses Hamilton Basso with two winters in Aiken inspiring his 1935 novel In Their Own Image. The story contrasts rich winter colonists and mill town workers in Horse Creek Valley, following Pierson James Emma Troy Langford and Benita Sturme as Aiken’s season unfolds. The piece highlights Basso’s portrayal of class divides amid Aiken’s spring bloom and notes Mack’s USC Aiken role and his regional histories.
