Kimberly-Clark announced a plan to cut about 1,600 global salaried jobs by year end. Beech Island plant impacts were not finalized, says corporate communications director Dave Dickson who told the Aiken Standard no specifics could be provided at this time.
The company plans worldwide workforce reductions affecting salaried and nonproduction roles. Beech Island plant contact not returned. Kimberly-Clark employs about 1,300 in Aiken County and 53,000 in the U.S. in 2008, with annualized pre-tax savings near 150 million. It operates in 35 countries and makes Kleenex Scott Huggies Pull-Ups Kotex and Depend. The Beech Island plant opened in 1968.
More than a dozen teens joined an altered clothes workshop at the Aiken County Public Library as part of the Teen Summer Reading Program. Attendees used feathers fringe ribbon scrap fabric paint and needle and thread to transform old garments.
The Aiken County Public Library invites patrons to a series of programs this July. Family Craft Night runs at 7 p.m. on Tuesday July 7, followed by celebrity Strawberry Shortcake appearances at 2 and 3 p.m. on Wednesday July 8. A Jackson man Terry Lee Hornsby 43 was the subject of a standoff with Aiken County deputies after a domestic dispute over missing medication. Investigators say Hornsby fired rounds at a TV from inside a home at 1243 Old Jackson Highway, possessing several guns and cameras. The tactical unit later captured him. he was treated and jailed. Police say victim Janice A Hornsby 40 reported the incident. This summary references the Aiken Standard report.
New Ellenton police investigated a late Thursday shooting on Walker Avenue. A shotgun victim was wounded around 8 p.m. The victim left the scene and escaped. A suspect was identified but officials had not released details by presstime.
Savannah River Site researchers including Dr. Marie Kane and Peng Jiang of the University of Florida study nanostructured coatings modeled on moths eyes to reduce reflection in solar cells from about 30 percent to under 2 percent. The project, funded by DOE and ARRA, tests durability on various substrates for harsh environments including space.
