Prosecutors accuse bankers of smearing chief witness in Whitewater case
In Little RockArkansas prosecutors moved to counter attacks on their chief witness by alleging two bankers sought to smear former bank president Neal Ainley. The probe links Clinton 1990 campaign financing to irregularities at Perry County Bank. Witness Bu ford Satterfield testified that he was ordered to investigate Ainley's expenses in June 1994 as authorities questioned bank officials about the Clinton fundraiser. Prosecutors say Branscom and Hill tried to redirect blame onto Ainley after learning of his cooperation with federal authorities. Satterfield planned to testify again as trial resumes.

Contempt Avoided Over Travel Office Documents Release
The White House halted a contempt vote as it agreed to let lawmakers view 2000 pages of subpoenaed 1993 travel office firing documents. White House counsel Jack Quinn said the move averted a constitutional crisis and follows earlier efforts to avert criminal contempt in the dispute with House Republicans.
