A large Friday evening barbecue rally in Gloverville drew about 500 supporters for Democratic candidate Richard W. Dick Riley. Flanked by W. J. Bryan Dorn and Sen. Tom Tournipseed, Riley urged volunteers to commit and care, vow to fight the good old boys system, and promised to return to the people if elected. He trails W Brantley Harvey Jr. in the upcoming primary runoff. Dorn had just won in Aiken.
A federal study finds many areas facing falling school enrollment as costs climb. In Aiken County expenses rose 43.57 percent over five years while enrollment fell about 10 percent. From 1971 to 1976 public school enrollment dropped in 36 of 50 states with an average 2.3 percent decline.
