Insurance settlement trims premiums for South Carolina customers
A $206 million settlement with American General Life and Accident Insurance Co. will bring relief to about 3.1 million South Carolina customers. Most affected are lower income black policyholders who faced overcharging through door to door sales and weekly payments. About a third of SC policyholders will receive a one time $150 plus an average 38.3 percent boost in death benefits and a 25 percent premium reduction. The rest get death-benefit increases and lower premiums. SC will receive $411,900 in fines while states collectively pay $7.5 million in penalties. South Carolina ranked sixth in minority overcharges among states.
