The Supreme Court considers government and The New York Times appeals in the Vietnam war Pentagon Papers dispute. A 5 p.m. deadline looms. The Washington Post would publish if no action is taken, while The Times may resume Saturday editions of material deemed safe by the Justice Department.
In Washington AP reports House investigators plan contempt charges against CBS president Frank Stanton after a four hour confrontation with Harley C Staggers chairman of the Commerce Committee. Staggers ordered Stanton to comply with a committee subpoena as the clash escalated.
Lyndon B. Johnson’s unpublished White House memoirs reveal early 1964 planning for large scale American military involvement in Vietnam. The disclosures align with the Pentagon study on the war's origins, a point Newsday reports.
A military judge refused to dismiss murder and assault charges against Capt. Ernest Medina over the My Lai assault in 1968. Col. Kenneth Howard ordered the case to trial, with jury selection tentatively set for July 19 and trial likely late this summer.
A civilian lab in the capital says its heroin detection device, now given to all GIs leaving Vietnam, is 100 times more sensitive than prior methods and can detect heroin up to five days after use. The developers describe it as a highly effective, hard to beat tool for identifying hard drug users.

He received a commendation medal the same day for aiding the America Cup race. Kudirka leaped aboard and was dragged to the Soviet fishing ship.
HEW civil rights chief J Stanley Pottinger says federal handling of school integration will be on a case by case basis. George Schultz notes remaining desegregation issues and fair play for black teachers and principals. Officials met with South Carolina Education Advisory Committee to review plans for this fall and emphasize individualized study of each district's needs.
Sen. Ernest Hollings says a new dental care bill co authored with Sen. Magnuson could help thousands of poor children in South Carolina by funding 338 million dollars over five years. The proposal targets uneven dentist distribution and would create training to address future needs.
On June 15 1971 Charles M Holmes a Clemson senior from North Charleston applied for the Citadel summer session but was denied due to his long hair. Charleston County Judge Theodore D Stoney ruled for the Citadel upholding its dress code. Holmes plans a federal appeal in Florence.
Conrad Hartzog and Bert Freeman will head this year’s United Fund drive aiming for a $278,152 goal set by planning chairman Frank Harling. Hartzog will be president with Freeman as acting campaign chairman. last year the campaign raised $255,440 and supported more than a dozen agencies including the Red Cross amid ongoing disputes with the Aiken Chapter over yearly commitments.
The report says heavy fighting around abandoned Fire Base Fuller with U S B52s striking twice in support of South Vietnamese infantry against mortar crews. Lt Col Le Trung Hien cited large sporadic contacts and said reinforcements were sent. Informants claim North Vietnamese overran Fuller then withdrew with American equipment.
The Senate approved a two year extension to the draft and authorized a $2.7 billion raise in soldiers pay while outlining a nine month phased withdrawal if all prisoners of war are released. The action comes after seven weeks of debate and may miss the current act’s expiry. Senate Leader Mike Mansfield pushed the end the war amendment, facing possible filibuster if the House conference panel weakens it.
A Columbia based report warns South Carolina that improving sub standard housing is a human issue. The Governor's Advisory Committee on Housing calls for state climate to enable participation in federal programs and favors better title laws, a State Housing Authority, and plumbing standards in urban dwellings. It urges more local housing authorities and support for private and non profit groups.
C B Smith of North Augusta received 24 stitches after hesitating when a robber ordered him to move. Two men entered a store with a pistol and a knife, striking Smith and Alvin E Morris who was present. A customer, Ronnie Craven, was shot at but the bullet hit a shelf.
