Susan Giddings defeats Gregg Gregory 541 to 497 in New Ellenton and Talatha precincts to secure a second term on Aiken County Council, District 2. statewide, Inez Tenenbaum wins Democratic nomination for state superintendent of education in Aiken County, 363 to 130, with 75 percent statewide. Voter turnout was about 2.2 percent with 1,556 of 70,151 registered casting ballots.

Local and national leaders greeted the Tuesday announcement that the Savannah River Site is the preferred site for a 500 million plutonium conversion MOX fuel plant bringing about 500 permanent jobs. The same decision favors the Pantex Plant for a disassembly mission with another 500 jobs as part of a U.S. strategy to dispose of excess weapons plutonium.

Board names new principals for Byrd and North Augusta Middle
The Aiken County School Board approved transfers and hires for the 1996 99 school year naming Glenn Sanders to Byrd Elementary Charles Reames abstained while Barry Head won unanimous approval as North Augusta Middle principal Baron Holloway Hickson to Belvedere Elementary and Dr Alice Sheehan to North Aiken Pinecrest Elementary with Larry Denn moving to Chukker Creek. The budget for 1998 99 received total board support totaling 147 169 864 with state funding at 54 percent and lease revenue at 39 percent.
