Scientists Find Natural Mars Laser. Implications for Planets
A Goddard Space Flight Center team reports a natural laser on Mars that is not a weapon. The discovery could affect physics theories of planetary atmospheres and help in finding new planets. Mars emits more power than the U S by over five times and may enable power beaming from orbit.

Mars Atmospheric Laser Discovery Shocks Scientists
Researchers using an infrared heterodyne spectrometer aboard the Goddard telescope complex observed natural lasing in Mars atmosphere. Carbon dioxide absorbs sunlight high in the air, pumping molecules into a laser state and indicating a substantial atmospheric temperature difference. The Mars laser mirrors CO2 lasers in principle but produces power beyond one million megawatts, dwarfing 1000 large hydroelectric plants.
