Center waits for word on more hires

Aiken County delays filling four proposed detention center officer positions after budget approval in 2003 2004 pending staffing analysis or state mandate. The $196 498 earmarked for the Doris C Gravat Detention Center remains tied to future decisions as council debates millage and staffing needs.

Aiken Council aims ATC millage row resolve issue

Aiken County Council member Scott Singer seeks a fix to the dispute over a 0.9 millage increase for ATC. The 2003-2004 budget allocates about $342,000 to ATC for a total of 4.5 mills but funds stay with ATC only if the council gains representation on its Board of Commissioners. Board appointments are made by the governor on delegation advice.

Fire on Ridge Avenue damages kitchen in Saturday blaze

Firefighters fought a mid afternoon kitchen fire at 491 Ridge Avenue from about 4 15 pm. No injuries were reported as flames were not visible from outside though smoke filled the home. Cadets suspect a stove top incident while cooling waters as crews kept the structure standing.
