In Rome AP reports the Communist Party advanced in the Italian parliamentary vote but could not topple the Christian Democrats who again failed to win a majority in the Chamber of Deputies. The result deepens political uncertainty and delays a new Christian Democratic government and relief from Italy’s economic crisis.
Myrtis Crafton a mother of two expecting a third was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and battery and drug possession for beating her children. Prosecution said bruises cuts and swelling followed an incident witnessed by the school principal. The 15 year sentence for the father and the family’s seven year separation were noted as context.
The U S Navy amphibious ship Spiegel Grove docked at Piraeus Athens with 110 Americans and 157 foreigners after a 45 hour voyage from Lebanon. A crowd of relatives consular officials and embassy staff welcomed the evacuees.

North Augusta Aiken County Magistrate George F DeLaughter Jr. died this morning at 1 15 from an apparent heart attack. He served four years as magistrate and seven as constable. Survived by widow Sarah two daughters Mrs Michael Graybille Mrs Guy Chapman one brother J B DeLaughter and three grandchildren. Funeral at 4 p m Wednesday at First Baptist Church in North Augusta.

Pepperidge Farm opens a new Aiken bakery in the industrial park producing over 3000 loaves per hour. The plant employs 97 people across a four day shift and ships bread daily to outlets in the Southeast. Plant manager George A Beaudoin notes it is one of six Pepperidge Farm bakeries in the nation and chose Aiken for its southeast reach.
