Former Aiken resident wins Fulbright to Germany
Matt Risher, former Aiken resident and Governor's School for Science and Math student, earns a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Germany for about 10 months. He has biology and German degrees from USC and aims for a master's in cognitive neuroscience. Risher previously interned at Savannah River Site and works this summer on a USC project assessing a chemical substance's antidepressant effects. The Fulbright program promotes US and international understanding and funds about 7,500 grants annually.

Woman sentenced to 10 years in Hot Spot robbery case
Tyeshia Newton, 21, of New Ellenton, received a decade in prison for involvement in the June 2009 Hot Spot robbery. Prosecutors called it an inside job. Newton aided the gunman who stole over $21,000 while she worked as a cashier.
