Mandela's Message Sparks U.S. Welcome Tour
Nelson Mandela arrived in New York on his first U S visit to rally support for ending apartheid in South Africa. Tens of thousands lined streets for a ticker tape parade as Mandela pledged ongoing sanctions and action to force change while plans for Harlem rally and Yankee Stadium fundraiser proceeded. Governors Cuomo Florio and Mayor Dinkins joined Mandela at Kennedy Airport amid a tour described as fraught with fatigue but aimed at pressing global pressure for freedom.
