Alley Mall proposal aims to brighten Aiken with six small shops

Property owner Marilynn Riviere and developer Charles Miller plan a pedestrian friendly Alley Mall behind Aiken’s central business district. The project would convert about 13,000 square feet into six retail spaces with canopies planters and a brick walkway. They seek varied general retail and possibly some services to create a relaxing, non urban renewal atmosphere akin to Charleston’s Rainbow Market.

Suspicious Fire Scars Historic Wilcox Hotel

A fire at the Wilcox Hotel in Aiken yesterday evening is being investigated as arson amid a string of six suspicious blazes. Chief Busbee indicated the 20 by 20 foot shed behind the hotel sparked the blaze before it spread to the attic, with officials noting no obvious accidental source. A three man task force is reviewing the rash of fires since May 25 including the former Southern Mortgage Building, Hankinson Cottage, a Park Avenue flower shop, a Park Avenue storage shed, and a barn near Coker Spring Drive.
