G 8 confident on Chinese trade talks in Cologne

In Cologne, G8 ministers remain optimistic on reviving negotiations to bring China into the World Trade Organization by year end. Despite a failed U S mission after NATO’s bombing of China's Yugoslavian embassy on May 7, officials say a WTO deal would push China to cut tariffs and meet global trade rules while the U S would normalize trade relations. Beijing has not signaled readiness to restart talks, but Canadian delegates at the G8 gathering anticipate an early resumption and view China’s WTO entry this year as plausible.
