The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control will spend 450000 from emergency funds to continue health screenings and environmental monitoring in Graniteville after last year’s train derailment and chlorine gas leak. About 225000 will come from this year’s budget and 225000 from next year’s emergency funds, in addition to 100000 already allocated this year. The plan, brokered by Sen Tommy Moore with Sen Hugh Leatherman and C Earl Hunter, aims to boost outreach and ensure people receive screenings amid job losses and insurance concerns.
Angelia Manley marched from Aiken Middle School in cap and gown joining 69 graduates from the S C Youth Challenge Academy at Carp Long. Her family cheered as she embraced her father in a moment the Engel family hailed as proof of the program’s impact. The academy, run by the S C National Guard, is a five month, military style residential program for at risk teens 16 to 18 focusing on academics coping skills job training responsibility and fitness. The class includes 21 counties with 19 from Aiken County and started January with 123 cadets the largest ever though only six percent graduated.
The Alconot Liversion Program in Aiken County partners with the South Carolina Highway Patrol to help first-time offenders ages 17 to 20 charged with minor in possession. Enrollment costs $250 plus a driver’s license or ID, social security card, and ticket copies. four two-hour classes, eight hours of community service, and a safety session aim to dismiss the charge and enable expungement.
Deb Cauthen and her sister and husband fundraise near Aiken Wal-Mart for medical relief. Deb, from Lancaster, suffers MRSA, gangrene, and a history of heart and health crises including four heart attacks. They seek Medicaid and disability support and hotel costs after being denied benefits.
South Carolina becomes the second state to offer academic credit for Bible study after Gov. Mark Sanford signed the Released time Credit Act on June 2. The program, already in three Lexington County middle school districts, will see about 6,500 students participate annually, with support from Bible Education in School Time Network and Midlands Christian Learning Center.
