Town to honor Aiken being named an All-America City with a Friday street party and the Aiken Standard publishing a 16 page section titled Aiken All-America City. The issue will feature project stories and both familiar and new photographs of residents.
Aiken hosts an All-America City celebration Friday in the Newberry Street parking area from 6 9 p.m. The block party features food soft drinks music line dancing souvenirs T shirts sidewalk art and family fun. Shuttle buses run 5 30 9 30 p.m. from Smith Hazel Recreation Center and H C Weeks Activities Center.
Redcliffe Elementary School wins one of ten nationwide awards from Business Week for its Arts Infusion program. Principal Candye Slay, retiring, notes the eight year effort blends fine arts into regular curriculum with weekly dance drama visual arts and music, supported by the Greater Augusta Arts Council and local corporations.
Circuit Judge Costa M. Plebones blocked unplugging of video poker machines as Aiken County delays a new zoning rule. A state law renewing cash payout prohibitions in 12 counties, aided by Sen. An Aiken man charged with the murder of his wife Regina Michelle Johnson, 29, was placed under a $200000 bond by Circuit Judge Costa M Plebones and ordered for a state hospital evaluation after a weapon incident. Troy Johnson was shot by public safety officers after refusing to drop his weapon and remains detained.
