The Commerce Department reports the U S merchandise trade deficit widened to 4 78 billion in April reversing a two month decline. Exports reached 35 56 billion marking a 4 45 percent jump from March as Americans bought more foreign goods by 5 9 percent.

Aiken County Council narrowly approved a $20.4 million Fiscal 1991 82 spending plan based on a 65.6 mill tax base with increases for debt service and funds shift. County Administrator W Scott Barnes was suspended and later terminated after an executive session, amid austerity moves including across the board cuts and hiring freezes.
