The State Ports Authority and Development Board plan to file an application to establish a general purpose foreign trade zone at Charleston Union Pier. The submission to the U S Department of Commerce is due by Sept 1 and will be reviewed by a federal official visiting South Carolina this week.

Tobacco Growers to Receive Indemnities After Flood Losses
Insured Palmetto State tobacco growers will share over 2 million dollars in indemnities for unharvested crop losses caused by floods and heavy rains. More than 500 growers have reported damage, with about one third of state growers insured for maximum protection totaling 24.7 million dollars. 80 percent of liability payable at the unharvested stage. Plan is to replant soybeans and other crops on affected land.
