South Carolina papers debate governor drafting as a path to efficient government. Editors urge a nonpartisan approach, warn against personal campaigns, and call for leaders with practical solutions and proven leadership to guide the state.
The state tax on cosmetics fell from 20 percent of retail price to 4 percent after a relief commission ruling. Ice cream bulk delivery tax was also removed. The commission cited physician and dealer victimization by the tax and patronage of out of state mail order houses as reasons for the change.
The Boy Scouts of Aiken arrange for Senator Thos. J. Heflin of Alabama to deliver his address The Story of the South in Aiken on Tuesday June 30. The event aims to support the Tent and Camp fund with a 30 minute Scout Minstrel beforehand and urges residents to save the date.
The Aiken county farming community and business leaders are called to act against a heavy boll weevil infestation. Clemson Extension warns that fields show 35 to 50 percent infestation and urges immediate poison application using calcium arsenate with a strict four spraying schedule to protect the cotton crop.
The late B. O. Courtney who died recently will be contested by Mrs. G. A. T. Moseley of Aiken. Henderson & Salley represent her. Williams, Croft & Busbee represent the proponents. The estate is valued around $20,000 with multiple heirs. Courtney, who died a bachelor, was admitted to probate in common form on May 15. Clarence and O'Neill Courtney are executors.
Crowded Baptist church bids farewell to Rev and Mrs P J McLean as they head to China as missionaries. Phillip McLean shares lifelong calls to ministry and faith, while Mrs McLean speaks of her own calling and joy in serving abroad. Congregation fills aisles with handshakes and prayers for Godspeed.
The Outing Club met Tuesday evening with about 150 members present. George H Leitner of Graniteville was elected president, George Croft retiring after two years. Wallace McNair became vice president and Claus Busch was reelected secretary and treasurer. Directors named include Harold Platt Frank P Henderson Ernest McCreary and Geo A Durban. The treasurer reported the club in splendid financial condition.
Special to The Standard Graniteville The people of Graniteville and nearby towns heard Governor Thomas G. McLeod speak at St. John's Methodist Church on Sunday morning. He preached on The Signs of the Times to a large congregation and impressed locals with his pulpit manner.
The Choral Society under Aiken Civic League direction by J. B Barth of Augusta presented The Rose Maiden Cantata to a fine audience at the Aiken opera house. About fifty voices sang with Mrs Holbrook presiding at the piano and Mrs Marion Bailey of Augusta assisting.
Mrs N G Davis and her son left Tuesday for Louisville Kentucky to visit relatives and spend time with family in the city.
Mrs. R. W. McCreary and young Louise Ariail are visiting relatives in Rock Hill. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Wicker spent the weekend in the city visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch.

Rogers stores numbering about 250 nationwide, headquartered in Atlanta, will expand into Aiken. The new grocery cash and carry will occupy the Hotel Aiken building, in the space now used by R G Tarrant, who moves to the Bank of Western Carolina’s former Oliveros site.
Captain Thomas J. Senn, born 1871 in Graniteville South Carolina, is selected for promotion to rear admiral on the naval selection board’s recommendation. He led the battleship North Dakota in World War I earning the Navy Cross and currently serves on the staff of the Commander in Chief U S Fleet at Newport.

The Yorkville Exquirer cites South Carolina tax issues as a warning to other states. It urges abolishing nuisance taxes on luxuries while condemning industrial and corporate tax burdens that curb growth. Wisconsin-style schemes threaten jobs and wages, risking outmigration of industry.
Mr and Mrs Robert Warland Darby of Charleston announce the engagement of their daughter Heanor Virginia to Lucius Hartwell Johnson vice consul of the United States stationed at Winnipeg Canada. The marriage is planned in the Royal Hotel in Winnipeg on June 27 with Miss Darby arriving June 25 and visiting Mrs John Erhardt before the ceremony. Johnson's father Wesley Johnson of Aiken and many local friends extend congratulations as plans unfold for the wedding with William Johnson of Aiken expected to attend.
A lively Friday gathering at Miss Gladys Johnson's home featured a contest with prizes and highly enjoyed refreshments. Visitors included Miss Louie Johnson of Rowlsville Cary Chapman of Williston Harold Jackson Lyte Joyner Noland Peacock and Otto Johnson.
Yesterday the Bank of Springfield filed a reference in the case against W. P. Hutto of Kitchings Mill. The matter was heard in Ashes before Master Edward Croft.
