Arson fires hit churches across the South prompt federal help
Federal agencies joined local authorities in investigating a spate of church fires since January 1995. In Kossuth Mississippi arson investigators and the FBI were called in as patrols increased near African American churches. A 109 year old Mount Pleasant church in Kossuth burned along with Central Grove. Local residents expressed shock and grief as investigators noted the fires appeared suspicious due to timing and proximity. Other fires included Hills Chapel Baptist Church in Rocky Point North Carolina and Pine Lake Baptist Church sanctuary in Pine Lake Georgia with officials cautious about labeling arson.

The Commerce Department reports May housing starts at 1.43 million annually, down 4.7 percent from April which was revised to 1.51 million. The drop marks the lowest level since December, while the South shows an exception with no decline. Mortgage rates averaged 8.09 percent in May, with rates rising above 8 percent last week. Analysts warn higher rates price 250,000 to 300,000 families out of the market per percentage point rise.
