Doctors puncture fetus to spare healthy twin
In a first of its kind procedure in the United States a Mount Sinai team punctured the heart of a defective five month fetus and left it to wither in the womb beside its normal twin after the mother chose not to face the burden of an abnormal child. The operation followed amniocentesis showing one twin had Down syndrome and was performed after earlier success in Sweden. The New England Journal of Medicine report notes the move drew anti abortion protest.
