South Carolina boosts K-12 funding in 2017 18 budget
The S C House and Senate approved an eight billion dollar education budget for 2017 18 with a fourteen million dollar increase in overall K 12 funding. Legislators approved twenty nine million for new buses but McMaster vetoed twenty point five million of lottery funds to replace aging buses. An override would need a two thirds vote. The plan includes sixty million to raise per pupil funding by seventy five dollars to two thousand four hundred twenty five, well below the mandated two thousand nine hundred eighty four. The Aiken County School Board supports replacing aging buses and funding for public schools, with the board citing fire risks from old rear engine buses.
