Freedom Summer changed the South and nation 50 years ago
In 1964 Mississippi saw hundreds of Northern white volunteers arrive to register Black voters and create Freedom Schools. Aviva Futorian, a Chicago teacher, worked with Roy DeBerry, a local teen, forming lasting friendships amid arson and arrests as they risked their lives to challenge segregation. The Mississippi Summer Project helped catalyze the Civil Rights Act and a nationwide shift toward equality.
