SCE&G seeks across the board rate hikes for power and gas
Columbia utility SCE&G asks state regulators for an average $111 annual rise for power and natural gas next year. Residential electric rates would jump about 7.5 percent or $91 yearly, affecting 630000 customers across 26 Midlands and Lowcountry counties. Commercial electric rates rise 5.83 to 6.87 percent while residential gas rates increase 2.33 percent, adding about $20 per year. Gas rate changes start in November with power rates in January. Kevin Marsh, company president, says higher costs to serve customers safely and reliably drive the move. The utility serves about 301000 natural gas customers and would raise $118 million annually to fund construction and mandated plants.
