Habitat for Humanity marks 20 years in Aiken County
Twenty years after Lester and Geneva Lewis became the first Habitat homeowners in Aiken County, their house on Horry and Bamberg streets stands as a landmark. Habitat has grown from a small pilot to a larger organization building 75 homes, with a goal of 10 per year, and expanding programs like the ReStore and financial literacy support. The Lewises stress the program helps people buy with a mortgage and insists Habitat is a self-help effort, not charity.
