Hodges Declares State of Emergency Blocks SRS Access
Gov Jim Hodges proclaimed a state of emergency to halt plutonium shipments into South Carolina and ordered troopers to the borders. About 20 police cars gathered at the U S Highway 278 and SC 19 intersection near Savannah River Site as trucks were checked and allowed through. A Columbia TV helicopter circled overhead while officials stated entry to SRS is prohibited and transport of plutonium on SC roads is banned. See Hodges, Page 6A.

Junior Downs pleads guilty to North Augusta child murder
William Ernest Downs known as Junior pleads guilty to the April 1999 slaying of six year old Keenan O Mallin in North Augusta. The plea waives a jury trial, giving Downs a life sentence without parole and avoiding a costly first day jury pool. The case sparked a broad search and a high profile investigation led by North Augusta Public Safety. Downs faces a guilt phase next Thursday and a penalty phase on June 24 before Judge Casey Manning.

Flags retired in local events in Aiken County
Aiken County veterans held three flag retirement ceremonies Friday. J D Pickett, a 24 year Navy veteran, led VFW Post 5877 members in burning worn flags as required by federal law. The ashes were buried after the Pledge of Allegiance and Taps. More than 125 flags were expected to be retired at North Augusta American Legion Post 71.

Brief Aiken County Storm Cuts Power to Thousands
A short lived but powerful thunderstorm hit Aiken County Friday evening bringing strong winds and rain. About 2000 SCE&G customers lost electricity as tree limbs fell on lines. Spokesperson Mary Greenbrown reported power was mostly restored by 8 pm after outages began around 6 pm.
