Hanssen case edges toward plea deal conditionally
Justice Department may drop the death penalty if Robert Hanssen cooperates and reveals secrets to prosecutors. The former FBI agent is charged with passing U.S. secrets to Moscow for 15 years in exchange for cash and diamonds. Sixteen charges carry the death penalty and prosecutors say his actions caused two double agents to die. Hanssen, arrested February 18 in Virginia, pleaded not guilty May 31.

Rain showers erase Aiken County rainfall deficit
Rainstorms across Aiken County added 1 to 2 inches, lifting the year's deficit. SRS meteorologist Chuck Hunter notes 25.9 inches of rain at the Savannah River Site this year, three inches above normal, with June totals gaining a three and a half inch surplus. Power outages affected about 200 customers mainly along U.S. 19 North and U.S. 1 North in Windor and Couchton.

Leak in underground tank at SRS poses no environmental threat
Westinghouse Savannah River Co official Dean Campbell said a pinhole leak in underground Tank 5 at the Savannah River Site has released about a cupful of radioactive liquid into a steel receptacle below the tank. He stressed the leak does not threaten the public, workers, or soil, noting no leakage reached the soil, following a larger January incident of about 90 gallons reaching a secondary area.

Northside Bi Lo shopping center planned for Aiken
Tad Barber of Planned Commercial Development says construction on a 16 acre northside site at York Street and Rutland Drive could start within 30 days after planning and DOT approvals. A 42,000 square foot Bi Lo will anchor the center with Dollar General among the three attached stores. four out parcels and a spring 2002 completion target are noted along with possible restaurants, a clothing store and a dry cleaner or florist. Barber frames the project as a catalyst for northside revitalization and residential growth.

In South Carolina Lottery Inquiries Surge On Launch
On the first day of state lottery readiness, 80 inquiries came to the lottery hot line and Web site about doing business with the games commission. Gov Hodges hoped a commission would be appointed soon, with three appointees named by each of Hodges, McConnell and Wilkins. The State Budget and Control Board will route inquiries to the new commission once established.
