Assistance Grant Totals 1.4 Million for Crime Victims

South Carolina receives a 1.4 million dollar grant to aid crime victims and survivors. The funds will be administered by the state Office of Victim Assistance and used for medical expenses lost wages from injury and funeral costs.

Millers whistleblower case against ThermalKEM Inc. resumes with a former supervisor accusing Miller of bypassing safety gear and causing the plant waste incinerator to overheat. The firm says it fired Miller, 31, for overfeeding the incinerator with liquid hazardous waste in the early hours of December 28. Miller contends he was following orders to compensate for missed feeds.

Aiken approves a 26 million 1994 95 budget with higher city fire protection rates for county residents and a 12 percent increase for city utility customers. Fire service fees were cut from 120 to 75 with a planned 45 increase next year while current county residents pay 8 annually.

A notice outlines monthly utility rate increases of 3.46 dollars and 6.92 dollars for out of city users, plus a 27 dollar annual rise for out of city fire protection. In county taxation, Aiken DPW charges a flat 8.20 dollars for homes under 20 000 value plus 0.12 dollars per 1000 over. City plan sets a 10 dollar base with 0.20 per 1000 over.

Republican Voters To Vote On Flag And Tax Issues

Republican primary voters will decide on three issues this summer including the Confederate flag, term limits, and elimination of the property tax on August 9. State GOP chairman Henry McMaster announced an advisory referendum after the executive committee met. The flag issue loomed over the 1994 legislative session as black caucus leaders pressed to remove the emblem from the State House.
