Reading focus expands in third grade across Aiken District
The South Carolina General Assembly approved literacy initiatives funded to all districts above 70 percent poverty, including Aiken County. The plan adds literacy coaches in all 20 elementary schools starting mid August, with thirteen high-poverty schools getting full-time coaches and seven others receiving half-time positions funded to full-time via other sources. The program aims to retain third graders below grade level, with full implementation in 2016 17. Each full position receives 60000 dollars, and the district will pursue rapid deployment. The legislation also expands four year old kindergarten to full day across elementary schools, affecting slot availability and funding.
