South Carolina Eyes New Crops for Growth
Agriculture Commissioner Les Tindal urges diversification to boost the state's outlook. He cites ornamental horticulture expanding up to 12 percent annually, 3.5 million square feet of greenhouses, and a beef of chicken production at $500 million yearly. The plan includes flax trials, an equine industry with 90,000 horses, and a linen mill project with Slovakian partners. Farmers may grow flax in wheat season, aid from a forthcoming test program.
