Army tightens smoking rules for soldiers and staff

The Army announced a sweeping directive to ban smoking in offices bases and on all vehicles and aircraft with July 7 effective date. Local commanders may extend restrictions further and Fort Jackson already bans smoking for recruits in basic training.

DNA Sequencer Aims to Accelerate Disease Research

PASADENA Calif AP a new machine decodes the structure of DNA quickly and cheaply boosting research into inherited diseases and cancer. Dr Leroy Hood and colleagues at Caltech outline the device in Nature with Erich Bloch hailing it as a major advance that could aid vaccine development and disease understanding. Dr James Brown calls it biology coming into the big time enabling large scale diagnosis and treatment advances.

Retail Sales Fall .1 Percent in May

The government reports May retail sales fell 0.1 percent, the third decline in four months, with auto sales up 0.6 percent and furniture gains at 2.8 percent. Total durable goods rose 0.2 percent while non durable goods slipped 0.3 percent amid weak consumer spending and reduced business investment plans.
