Sale of 150-year-old Civil War era hall sparks island debate
On Daufuskie Island residents question the sale of the 150 year old Brothers and Sisters Oyster Society Hall listed on the National Register. The Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation cites cost to restore or move at 250000 and says board acted to preserve the structure by selling to Melanie Larson of Abilene Texas for 40000 with conditions to keep exterior features. foundation president Rob Kennedy says sale avoids decay and keeps the building accessible. Wendy Campbell accuses the board of breaking rules and calls for member meetings. Proceeds will fund other projects and the foundation retains first option if the property returns to market.
