State Seeks Death For Koon

The penalty phase of Paul F. Koon's trial opened with jurors to choose between life in prison or death by electrocution for the murder of Valerie White Newsome of Martinez Georgia. Testimony from Augusta banker Douglas Beasley described a man with broad shoulders abducting Newsome on September 6 1980 and leaving her car keys and purse behind. Former Sheriff Paul Grant testified Koon claimed Newsome was not sexually molested and that he grabbed her around the neck and strangled her. Newsome was abducted from an Augusta shopping center and found in Aiken County on October 15. The guilty verdict was returned Tuesday by a 12 person jury with four women and eight men.
