Emily Gillespie and Linda Ruth Adams, both 21 and from Georgia and Alabama respectively, died when their Auburn University car struck a bridge pier over Interstate 85 en route to Cape Cod. Emily’s sister Laura Gillespie, 19, survived in satisfactory condition. Three other passengers were in the following car.

A locked wheel caused by an electrical failure derailed the City of New Orleans passenger train near Tonti two miles north of Salem Illinois. Ten died and 94 were injured as 224 aboard faced a 90 mph crash. Investigators cited wheel defect and a crossover mechanism as factors.
The South Carolina House approved a $1.2 million bond amendment for the University of South Carolina Aiken campus. A $1 million Aiken County supplemental appropriation bill for the current year was introduced, detailing allocations for USCA construction, land purchase, TEC center, hospital addition, courthouse fees, landfill operations, and sheriff’s department funding.
