Final depleted uranium metal shipped from SRS M Area to Utah
The last shipment of depleted uranium metal left the Savannah River Site M Area for a Utah facility, clearing the way to demolish some original site buildings. M Area produced target material used at five reactors for arming the U.S. nuclear arsenal, with 2,600+ metric tons stored before disposal. No incidents occurred during transfers, and 3,270 drums of depleted uranium oxide in F Area are also being moved to Environcare in a pilot to ship 1,815 metric tons this summer.
