Budget hearing highlights school funding debate
About 15 people spoke on a tentative district budget Tuesday with two thirds opposing any tax hike. The millage plan would raise $76.80 per $100 of value for businesses owning homes, while homeowners faced $36 more for debt service. Board members considered delaying the operations millage under a proposed change, awaiting 2012 consideration with anticipated General Assembly funds. Critics urged cuts and maintenance focus, while supporters urged continuing public education funding despite tax pain. The board votes on June 2 to approve the budget.
