The dry weather is delaying area farmers from planting crops. USDA SC Agricultural Statistical Reporting Service reports adequate soil moisture dropped from 58 percent to 6 percent in a week, delaying soybeans and sorghums and stressing corn in some areas.
A 26 year old Charleston man identified as Thomas Mitchum jumped from the Silas N. Pearman Bridge during rush hour. He leapt from the 150 foot high span into 40 foot deep waters below near Mount Pleasant. Rescue teams searched the Cooper River area within a mile but suspended the search due to strong winds and rough seas.
Strong thunderstorms with gusty winds and hail are possible this evening. The low will be in the upper 60s. Mostly cloudy skies and cooler weather are forecast tomorrow with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. The high will be in the upper 70s. See details on Page 10A.
