Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Labour Party secured a strong mandate in the United Kingdom, winning enough seats to form a majority in the House of Commons. Conservative leader William Hague called to congratulate Blair and soon resigned as Tory leader.
In Osaka Japan a man with a knife stormed an elementary school injuring many and killing at least eight children. Two teachers restrained him and he was arrested. Police linked the attacker to prior work at a nearby school and an arrest record. Two died on site, six later at hospital.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation releases before and after crash rates for improved highway sites while noting the state has the nation’s third highest traffic fatality rate. Officials cite obsolete bridges, congestion, and eroded roads and urge increased funding to fix the system.
Aiken lawmakers announce a plan approved by both chambers allowing retired qualified teachers to return to teaching without retirement benefits being affected. The measure, effective after July 1, aims to boost teacher quality and staffing in critical districts with support from Gov Hodges and state education leaders.
North Augusta City Council faces a June 18 vote on purchasing 139.77 acres of Churchill tract riverfront property from Judith McCarthy Mary Bright Parker and Laura Phinizy for 2.6 million dollars. If approved the city plans a riverfront master development linking to Greeneway and Riverside Park with mixed use including a hotel and conference center funded by taxes and grants.
