County ends summer meals program amid funding fears

Aiken County Council voted to discontinue administering the USDA summer food program due to regulatory interpretations that could trigger losses for the county. Only 33 of 54 lunch sites pre qualified, with 21 sites needing two hours of supervised activities. Officials warned unclear rules could jeopardize funding and previously led to a $42,000 charge, later reversed. The council approved other fiscal matters including sheriff funding, drainage projects, and new insurance contracts.
