Local Option Tax Discussed by Aiken County Council

Aiken County Council Chairman Carrol H. Warner said the panel would back another local option sales tax referendum only if cities agree to allocate all new revenue to property tax cuts. The idea, defeated in 1990 by about 13,000 votes, was revived during a Misty Lakes meeting near Graniteville as public sentiment on tax increases remains wary.

Local option tax could yield millions for Aiken County

Tax Commission staff reports show a local option sales tax in Aiken County could generate over 7.7 million in new revenue. Of this, 389,579 would fund a distribution to smaller counties, while 4.7 million would go to the county, 1.4 million to the city of Aiken, and 875,900 to North Augusta. Eight smaller towns would share the remainder, with Windsor receiving 5,946 and New Ellenton 124,658. The law requires 67 percent of revenues for tax relief, and a sizable portion of the rest to property tax cuts, or the note indicates a page continuation.
