A teenager faces 1 million bail in the abduction of socialite Mrs. Jack M. Friedland 43 who was freed unharmed four hours later. FBI hunts two more suspects after $60,000 ransom was recovered. Frank Wyatt Jr 18, son of a Philadelphia policeman, was arrested after the ransom was paid.
AP survey finds major oil companies including Exxon Mobil Shell Atlantic Richfield and Continental boosting wages for nonunion U S employees with pay raises and one month bonus at some firms. Some boosts extend to union workers as well.
A House Judiciary Committee source says President Nixon weighed lie detector tests for hundreds of thousands of federal workers during a 1971 leak hunt. The confidential tape heard by the committee says tests could apply to all employees with a security classification, about 300,000, though none were ever given.
Washington reports that U.S. space officials find evidence that the Soviet Union was not in the race to land a man on the moon. The Soyuz spacecraft is described as less capable than the Gemini and largely ground controlled, unable to complete a lunar mission.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley says many of the 979 Soviet officials in the United States are intelligence operatives. He notes ongoing Soviet political military and economic intelligence efforts and that the FBI is reassigning more agents to counter these operatives.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger acknowledged some validity to critics who say his Middle East peace efforts hurt other foreign policy areas. Former attorney general Richard G. Kleindienst received a one month suspended jail sentence and a $100 fine for refusing to answer fully and accurately during questions on the ITT antitrust case. Judge George L. Hart Jr. cited integrity and noted Kleindienst’s attempts to protect others, referencing President Nixon’s order to drop the ITT suit.
Aiken County School Board asks the county delegation for fiscal autonomy over its tax rate authority of 74 mills for schools and 23 for county operations. Rep. Marshall Cain says a decision is expected next week or in 10 days as the delegation reviews the request prompted by broader proposals from the State School Board Association.
