Salisbury Rhodesia A spokesman for Wankie Colliery says 468 miners are feared dead after a major underground explosion at the mine 200 miles north of Bulawayo. At the time 435 Africans and 33 whites were underground. rescuers face gas and ventilation problems. only four injured miners are reported hospitalized.

Edgefield County officials sign a management contract with Paramedical Services of South Carolina to own and operate two ambulances. Paramed will oversee the service while Edgefield pays $300 monthly. two EMTs will be stationed at Edgefield Hospital with a second station planned at Johnston Rescue Squad.
