Girls Explore Math and Science Careers in Summer Tech Team Camp
Twelve year old Autumn Ortiz joins 45 girls from needy districts for a three day Tech Team camp in Columbia. State Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum says the program aims to broaden access to science and engineering careers. Girls from Geiger Elementary Fairfield Middle Hopkins Middle and Johnakin Middle learn video production research and computer skills while meeting women professionals. They will tour Columbia College and the University of South Carolina and visit the observatory. The program, funded by a National Science Foundation grant via South Carolina Educational Television, runs over three years with weekly teacher guidance and future lessons in Web design and computer programming.
