Aiken County Considers Budget Cuts For Fiscal 1992

Aiken County Council plans further cost reductions tonight as it tackles a near 1 million dollar deficit in the Fiscal 1992 budget. A 7 pm regular session and 6 pm work session will address a shortfall of 559000 in general funds and 251000 in landfill operations, with Best Friend Express service singled out for review. The council aims to approve a public hearing and final reading on June 18, while 1991 budget concerns and a cap expansion via lease-purchase debt over 5 million add pressure. County Administrator W Scott Barnes described the task as the most difficult of his decade-long tenure.

Aiken's 450th Ordered Home From Saudi Arabia

The 450th U.S. Army Reserve ordnance company will return from Saudi Arabia around July 31, per Army officials to Rep. Derrick. Activated for Desert Shield, the unit has been in the Saudi desert since November 4, with orders to stay until Sept. 26 to complete its mission. Troops Find Four Victims Of Eruption

In Shimabara Japan soldiers in protective gear entered the ash filled area and recovered four bodies while sighting 24 others as Mount Unzen sent pyroclastic flows. The eruption left at least 31 missing, including three researchers and 16 journalists, and forced evacuations of about 5 000 people from Kamikoba as 20 were injured.
